Even with the increased prevalence of hypertension, 25% are unaware they have hypertension and almost 30% do not receive care for their diagnosed hypertension (Himmelfarb, Commodore-Mensah, & Hill, 2016, p. 243). Not only is hypertension a major chronic disease, but it is the most important risk factor for other co-morbidities such as cardiovascular disease, renal disease, stroke, and premature death.
