Effectiveness of different leadership styles used in the public services!!

The public services use all these types of leadership styles in missions or just
normal jobs around the base. All leadership styles are effective in their own
way as you cannot use all the different types of leaderships in every situation
as it wouldn’t be effective and may not get the job done

Authoritarian
Overall I believe this is an effective leadership style as it is extremely direct which gets the
job done instantly without people complaining. This is very effective in dangerous situations.
The army would use this leadership style when being under attack as it is very effective
when orders are given out almost instantly which allows the soldiers to get organised and
overcome the problem. If democratic was used in this situation it would waste a lot of time
as everyone is saying their thoughts and this wouldn’t be effective in this situation which
may cost lives.

ADVANTAGES

The advantage of using this certain leadership style is all the decisions are made by the
leader which makes the process a lot faster. The leader will have full control which makes it
easier when delivering the plans to larger groups. Another reason why this style is good is
because everyone knows what their role is to do, which allows all the individuals to be
organised.

DISADVANTAGES

There are also a few disadvantages about using this leadership styles as well. As the leader
has full control of the team if anything goes wrong the leader will have to take the blame. As
the team members have little input they can stop listening, or even disagree with what the
leader is saying and may not follow the orders that have been set. Someone individuals can
be scared of the leader which may affect their performance when doing their role.




Democratic
Democratic is a very good leadership that can be very effective when the right leader is using
it. Democratic can be used for the swat team when raiding a building to gather evidence or
rescue civilians from being held hostage. This is effectively in the public services as it allows
everyone to get involved to come up with a better plan to overcome the problems in that
situation.

, ADVANTAGES

In this leadership style there are many advantages of using it such as every team member is
more involved and feels valued when forwarding their ideas. All members are respected by
the leader which makes the team more effective. This may cause the respect for the leader
to improve as well. All the ideas said from the team members are used to make a more
effective and better decision in the end.

DISADVANTAGES

A democratic leadership style also has it disadvantages. This takes a lot of time to come up
with a decision which can sometimes not be effective in the public services as jobs are
normally done fast and quickly. Hardly used when decisions are needed instantly. Not
appropriate for short term issues etc. in the public services.




Laissez Faire
In my opinion I do think that this is an effective leadership in the right job. This is effective
because it allows the team to work together and do things how they like to do it which
makes them feel more comfortable when doing the role. This can contribute to the
effectiveness in public services when a unit is investigating a murder scene, because the
leader will give out a few orders but the individual in the team will take control and do what
they need to do. A leadership style that wouldn’t be suitable would be bureaucratic as it’s
not flexible all the time which may cause the job to take longer then normal.

ADVANTAGES

This leadership style allows the leader to take a step back without all the responsibility being
on them. This will motivate the team members to perform better as they want to prove they
are able to do their roles without be bossed about. All members in the team feel valued and
important. This can make tasks be done faster and better.

DISADVANTAGES

In this style the leader doesn’t get a lot of control over the team members in the group.
Some team members may find it quite hard to do their role as the leader hasn’t said what to
do. The leader may feel like he doesn’t have control at all with the group and isn't helping
anyone out. This may cause him/she to get annoyed.
