Considering the opportunity for others to learn - Answer- Very Important (teaching) The availability of a more senior colleague to assist with a difficult/agitated patient - Answer- Important (helps patient safety) When there has been a breach of confidentiality, the fact that a certain factor such as the identity of the placement organisation has not been revealed - Answer- Not important at all (confidentiality is very important) An upset patient's reputation for being very emotional - Answer- Not important at all (assuming the reason for being upset may compromise patient safety) A consultant talking about clinical details loudly in a public area making a patient worried, and a medical student responding "I can reassure you that your details will remain confidential " - Answer- Inappropriate but not awful (not a lie, however it may not be true either. Best not to make promises like this in medicine) Suggesting that a patient follows the hospital complaints procedure if they wish to make a complaint - Answer- A very appropriate thing to do (the patient has the right to complain about this as it should not happen. Breaches of confidentiality should be taken to the highest level and treated formally) Saying "it is your choice whether you take the medication" to a patient who is in a substantial amount of pain and is worried they may have an allergic reaction to the medication - Answer- Inappropriate but not awful (whilst this is true, it does not help the situation or make the patient less worried when they should really take the medication) Asking "why do you think that you will have another allergic reaction?" As a medical student - Answer- A very appropriate thing to say (makes the ream aware of the patient's concerns so that they can be addressed, my make the patient feel better to talk about it too) "Can you please calm down; you may be disturbing the other patient " to a patient - Answer- A very inappropriate thing to say (the patient is in pain and it may agitate the, more, it isn't polite and it is not his fault that he is distressed or in pain) Asking a patient "did you express your concern to the doctor when you were prescribed the paracetamol?" - Answer- Appropriate but not awful (whilst not a bad thing to say, it does not really solve the problem) A group of students doing a presentation, presenting their individual sections as a run through, One member thinks another is struggling and didn't think she was very good but the rest of the group said it was "fine", asking the group if they have any further feedb
