THE USE OF BODILY FLUIDS IN THE ANALYSIS OF DISEASE AND
PATHOLOGICAL STATES

The report is based on the use of data acquired in the practical ‘Protein
determination using the Bradford method’ and data generated for the ‘Glucose
Tolerance Test’
Your various graphs and analyses, along with the results you obtain from your
background reading should be entered into the appropriate spaces in the proforma.

This proforma must be completed electronically as it will be submitted on line.

Name and SRN

In order to complete this proforma you will need to consult either a textbook on
clinical biochemistry or to search online.

The positioning of material/graphs/calculations must be in positions indicated. Marks
will be lost if this instruction is ignored

All graphs should usually be produced using Excel or a similar graphing
package.
If you draw the graphs by hand you will need to photograph them or scan them
followed by pasting the photographed/scanned graph into the blank space
provided as e.g. a JPEG file.

Section 1

The determination of protein in clinical samples is a commonly used technique.
Give two examples of pathological or disease states where protein is found in the
urine. Explain the physiological basis as to why protein will be found in the urine in

, each state. Please restrict each answer below to a maximum of 200 words. This
does not mean you need to produce 200 words Clarity is more important than
amount.

Example 1

Proteinuria tends to occur when there is a high rise of protein that is found in the
urine; this is linked to the kidney being disrupted. This tends to be the early
indication of chronic kidney disease for this. The reason why this is dangerous is
that this can increase the chance of issues of heart disease. Chronic kidney
disease is the loss of the kidney mobile; when it comes to the severity, the patient
might need a kidney transplant, therapy, and dialysis. In the worst-case scenario, if
the patient has diabetes, inflammation, kidney stones, and hypotension, this will
impact the kidneys. But in terms of lifestyle if excessive exercise, aspirin, chronic
stress, and cold temperatures can trigger proteinuria. Scientifically, this happens
when the glomeruli or the tubules tend to be damaged and when there is an issue
in terms of the reabsorption process of the proteins (Clinic, 2022).
