Question 1
A reading profile gives insight into factors such as students’ reading
experiences both at home and at school, their attitudes, self-efficacy, use of
strategies, reading habits, and socioeconomic status which plays a major role
in reading proficiency. This will help the teacher to identify and know the
composition and type of learners they have in their classroom. In turn
provides teachers with powerful information to provide targeted instruction to
students with differing literacy needs.
Three pillars which inform effective language teaching are activation of prior
knowledge and build background knowledge, access content and extend
language Cummins believes English instruction has three pillars. Use these
pillars to educate children's literature. When working through a book with your
learners, integrate activities that develop their language in each pillar.
Build on past knowledge
Background knowledge helps us interpret new information. Using background
knowledge, we interpret what we read. We couldn't interpret the material
without some background knowledge. Knowing more about a topic helps us
understand what we're reading. If you're not a trained paediatrician, it's
difficult to grasp an academic paper geared at paediatricians because you
lack the necessary background. If your pupils have little prior knowledge on a
topic related to a book you wish to employ, you must introduce them to
enough information to assist them understand what they will be encountering.
Access content
If a text or book you want to use in class is above your learners' skill level, you
must scaffold their learning by customizing the learning materials. A teacher
may employ graphics or an image to illustrates a point. One may act out bits
of texts that students don't understand. This provides a visual explanation and
adds movement to the lesson. When students don’t understand a principle
maybe the meaning of words the teacher may make them use a dictionary
which is another classroom staple. The students can look up difficult terms.
Always relate new information to the learners' background. Personalize and
familiarize the new knowledge. This helps students understand new material.
