,Definition of Statistics
Statistics is concerned with collection, processing, analysis,
interpretation and presenting of data to assist decision makers.
1 Collecting, summarizing and presenting data is called
descriptive statistics. Such summaries may be graphical,
numerical or tabular.
2 Once you have studied probability and probability distributions,
you will use formal methods for drawing conclusions from your
data. These formal methods are called inferential statistics.
Statistical inference uses probability to determine how
confident we can be in drawing conclusions about a population
based on a sample.
