The Learning Approach- Assumptions
• At birth we are a blank slate (tabula rasa in Latin)
• Environment shapes our behaviour
• Behaviour can be learnt/shaped through association of a
stimulus and response
• Behaviour can be learnt through observation and imitation
• The Learning Approach is an umbrella term-> Includes all 3
theories
Stimulus -> Response
• Stimulus is any aspect within our environment which can
arouse an action
• Response is an observable action that is carried out-> How you
react to the stimulus
Formula for Classical Conditioning
1. UCS -> UCR Automatic
2. UCS + NS -> UCR Associate NS with UCS
3. CS -> CR Occurs after repeated pairing
UCS- Unconditioned Stimulus
- The original stimulus that causes a reflexive response
- Causes us to respond in an unlearnt/natural way
