Behaviour management is an important part of setting the classroom out as a place

for learning for all, it sets out clear boundaries and rules to the children which

enables them to develop positive and respectful relationships between each other.

Behaviour management also allows for the teacher to create a safe and calm

environment in which the children’s learning is secure, focused on and allows

children to adjust to a structure which they can follow and build upon their social

skills, critical thinking skills in which they think about what consequences their

actions will have. Having a successful behaviour management will lead to an

environment where all the children are focused, interested and engaged. Creating a

positive learning environment through a strong behaviour management in which the

children respect the teacher and their peers, learning will become the focus and will

be more engaging for the children and the teacher will have their full attention and

their respect.

Positive reinforcers are used to maintain good behaviour in the classroom and

control the classroom environment to maintain the learning. “The reason positive

reinforcement is important in the classroom is that it can be used to effectively

change student behaviour.” (Smith, 2017). Star of the week is a very popular way of

rewarding positive behaviour in the classroom and also highlights achievements that

the children have achieved in their learning and behaviour. School A’s policy

highlights the fact that they use the star of the week to positively encourage the

children to succeed and follow the pupil code of conduct, as well as encouraging the

children to further their learning and to push themselves to better their understanding

and learning. Skinner’s operant conditioning links into the reinforcements of a

repeating process of different conditions both positive and negative effects and
