Rational Numbers Numbers that can be expressed in the form a/b, where a and b are integers and b is not zero. Ex. 7/8 Irrational Numbers Numbers that cannot be expressed as a ratio of two integers. Their decimal expansions are non-ending and non-repeating. Ex: Pi 3. etc Real Numbers The set of all rational and irrational numbers Exponent A superscript number placed next to another at the top right. It indicates how many times the base number is to be multiplied by itself. PEMDAS The order of operations. (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction) The Laws of Exponents 1) Any number to the power of 1 is equal to itself. Ex: a(1) = a. 2) The number 1 raised to any power is equal to 1. Ex: 1(n) = 1 3) Any number raised to the power of 0 is equal to 1. Ex: a(0) = 1 4) Add exponents to multiply powers of the same base number. Ex: a(7) x a(8) = a(7+8) 5) Subtract exponent to divide powers of the same number. Ex: a(7) / a(8) = a(7-8) 6) Multiply exponents to raise a power to a power. Ex: (a(n))m = a(nxm) 7) If multiplied or divided numbers inside a parentheses are collectively raised, this is the same as each individual term being raised to that power. Ex: (axb)n = a(n) x b(n) OR (a/b)n = a(n) / b(n) Square Root A number that when multiplied by itself equals a given number. Perfect Square Numbers whose square roots are integers (1-10). Scientific Notation A method of writing or displaying numbers in terms of a decimal number between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of 10. Ex: a x 10(n) Prime Factor Breaking down a composite number until all of the factors are prime. Greatest Common Factor The largest factor that two or more numbers have in common. Least Common Multiple The smallest multiple (other than zero) that two or more numbers have in common. Equivalent
