DNA als erfelijk materiaal
Bij alle cellulaire organismen (maar niet altijd bij virussen)
 DNA bevat alle informatie nodig om kopieën van zichzelf te maken
 DNA = nucleïnezuur; = ruggengraat van fosfaatgroep en suikermoleculen (desoxyribose) afwisselen met aan
het suiker één van 4 basen (guanine, adenine, cytosine, thymine)
 Suikermolecule + base = nucleoside
 Suikermolecule + base + fosfaatgroep = nucleotide
 Waterstofbruggen tussen complementaire basen  complementaire baseparing verwijst naar het fenomeen
waarbij de nucleobasen in verschillende strengen van een nucleïnezuur waterstofbruggen vormen volgens
vaste combinaties: AT, AU en CG.
 DNA streng heeft begin = 5’ en einde = 3’
