Summarize the intent of one of these laws and its impact on your practice. Please be sure that the posts are quality and not quantity-based. Dr. Bhatt and Classmates, I remember when HIPPA came out in 1996. It was confusing and the facility in which I worked was not clear themselves about how this was to work. What I did at that time glean from the information was that there were significant fines for breach of confidentiality. This area was stressed heavily during that initial introduction to HIPPA. The need to protect personal health information (PHI) has been interpreted in many ways (Chamberlain College of Nursing, 2015). Although the intend was to simplify the reimbursement of claims by eliminating the paper trails, I have found that there are still facilities that have not adopted the electronic health records system yet (EHR). Part of the HIPPA system is the PHI system that gives limited access to those who are not designated as persons who need to know (CCN, 2015). HIPPA has turned 12 years old this year and have branched out into the HIPPA Security Rule of 2003 which went into effect in 2005 and the Breach Notification Rule as well (Solove, 2013). At our facility, in the hospice setting, the night on call shift has access to all files in our Devaro system. I discovered that some of our LPNs were checking on patients they were not assigned to on that night but had been assigned in the past. They wanted to know how the patient was doing. On the night shift we do not get a daily report of the current events of the days
