Cultural Artifact Analysis
Culture is important in the world today. Cultural awareness and competency is very
important for every individual today. This is mainly because of the available means to travel
around the world. At the workplace, people from different cultures around the world come
together regardless of their unique cultures and beliefs. As an African American immigrant from
Africa, I have come to appreciate different cultures from different parts of the world. Different
cultures have different cultural artifacts. In this paper, a cultural artifact analysis is conducted.
Description of the Artifact
The artifact selected for this analysis is My Miss America painting by artist Ernie Barnes.
This painting was done using oil medium on canvas (Norman Rockwell Museum, n.d.). There
are a number of things about the artifact that appealed to me. First, the painting is of a woman
that appears to be strong based on how the artist has painted the arms and legs. Notably, the
woman is seen carrying two baskets and yet, she is standing upright and with her eyes closed.
The amount of strength noted in the woman despite what she is seen carrying in the painting is
very appealing
Historical and Artistic Context
This particular artifact was created in the year 1970. During this period, a lot of civil
rights movements were taking place. African American women during this period were working
very long hours in order to be able to support their families. Notably, the artist’s bibliography
notes that Barnes would sometimes accompany his mother to work (erniebarnes.com, n.d.). His
mother’s hard work might have inspired this particular painting.
The artist uses a couple of techniques in the artifact. First, the artist has decided to paint a
situation that takes place every day of woman carrying two baskets. The artist uses lines on the
