Duty Cycle The percentage of a ten-minute period that a welding machine can continuously produce its rated amperage without overheating. Governor A device used to limit engine speed. Motor-generator A combination device in which the motor turns the shaft of a generator which in turn produces an AC voltage. Conductor A material that will support the flow of an electrical current. Copper wire is the most common conductor. Polarity Refers to the direction of electrical current flow in a DC welding circuit. Rectifier An electronic device that converts AC voltage into DC voltage. Step-down transformer An electrical device that uses two wire coils of different sizes, referred to as the primary and secondary windings, to convert a higher voltage to a lower through induction.
