Fractions
Definition: A fraction describes a part of a whole number. Key (text colour coding):
Green = Important Information
1
If a pizza was split into 4 slices and you took 1 slice, you would have of
4 Blue = Methods/Instructions
3
the pizza. The remaining pizza would be of the whole. Red = Examples
4

The top number in a fraction is called the numerator, and the bottom one is the denominator. Going back to
the pizza example, the numerator tells you how many pizza slices you have, while the denominator tells you
2
how many slices the pizza is split into. means you have 2 slices of a 5-slice pizza.
5

Sometimes, two fractions with different numerators and denominators will be equivalent, meaning they
1 2
describe the same amount. and are equivalent because having 1 slice of a 2-slice pizza is the same as
2 4
2 4
having 2 slices of a 4-slice pizza. Likewise, and are also equivalent.

How to simplify fractions:

When you simplify a fraction, you are trying to get the numerator and denominator to be as small as possible.

1. Find a number which evenly divides into the numerator and denominator
6
Using as an example, 3 divides into 6 and 18
18

2. Divide the numerator and denominator by this number and write down the fraction
afterwards
6 2

18 6

3. Check if the resulting fraction can be simplified further
2
The numbers in can both be divided by 2, so we repeat the process described above and get the
6
1
result
3

4. Repeat Step 3 until the fraction cannot be simplified further
1
cannot be simplified further, so this is our final answer.
3

Make sure you divide the numerator and denominator by the same number, or you will get the wrong
answer.
