Unit 13 – Recruitment and Selection in Business
Task 1
Identify how two organisations plan recruitment using internal and external
sources

Macmillan Academy: Macmillan Academy may set up a vacancy if there is no one currently
occupying a position because someone has left to go to work for another organisation
therefore their position in the academy needs to be filled by someone else hence why a
vacancy is needed. Others reasons for the vacancy could be because of the current individual
holding the position have become sick or are on maternity leave. The vacancy could have
also happened because of the academy getting busier and therefore needing extra staff in
order to counter the high work load. Macmillan recently set up a vacancy to replace the
exams officer because he was leaving the organisation and thus Macmillan Academy had to
find another individual suitable for the role. When looking to take the decision to recruit,
Macmillan Academy would first make sure that they actually need to recruit a new person
and whether or not the work can be done by someone else already associated to the academy.
Before recruiting, they may also look at how much work the staff is currently doing at the
organisation and whether or not they have ability to do extra work in order to disregard the
idea of recruiting someone new. Furthermore, Macmillan Academy will look towards the
future to whether or not the vacancy will still exist then or if technology is able to replace the
individual’s job. Macmillan Academy has decided to take the decision to recruit as there will
be an individual leaving the business whom has an important role that cannot be replaced
with technology and other staff in the academy already have a busy workload.

McDonalds: McDonalds may set up a vacancy if there is no one currently occupying a
position because someone has left to go to work for another organisation therefore their
position in the organisation needs to be filled by someone else hence why a vacancy is
needed. Others reasons for the vacancy could be because of the current individual holding the
position has become sick or are on maternity leave. The vacancy could have also happened
because of the organisation getting busier and therefore needing extra staff in order to counter
the high work load. McDonalds recently set up a vacancy to replace the manager because he
was leaving the organisation and thus McDonalds had to find another individual suitable for
the role. When looking to take the decision to recruit, McDonalds would first make sure that
they actually need to recruit a new person and whether or not the work can be done by
someone else already associated to the organisation. Before recruiting, they may also look at
how much work the other workers are currently doing at the organisation and whether or not
they have ability to do extra work in order to disregard the idea of recruiting someone new.
Furthermore, McDonalds will look towards the future to whether or not the vacancy will still
exist then or if technology is able to replace the individual’s job. McDonalds has decided to
take the decision to recruit as there will be an individual leaving the business whom has an
important role that cannot be replaced with technology and other workers within the
organisation do not hold the skills to fulfil the manager role.
