Mahbub Rahman – Unit 13 – P1 – Identify how two organisations plan
recruitment using internal and external sources

Introduction
In this task, I am going to talk about how Tesco and Harlington Community School plan
recruitment. But first, I will discuss recruitment and selection, the importance of
recruitment and selection, and why vacancies occur.

Recruitment and selection
Recruitment and selection is the process of finding the best candidate for a job opening,
choosing the most qualified and most suitable applicant. There are two types of
recruitment; internal and external. Internal recruitment is when the organisation recruits
someone who already works for the company, but to do a different job (e.g. a sales
consultant may become the manager). External recruitment is when the organisation hires
someone from outside the company.

Importance of recruitment and selection
Recruiting and selecting is important to any organisation. It is important to hire the best
possible applicant in order to save time and money, and so that the open job role is filled
successfully. The costs of advertising a job can add up to approximately £6000, so selecting
the most qualified applicant at first will beneficial to the organisation, as the money-saving
and time-saving will make it most efficient. If the right applicant isn’t hired, the
organisation’s quality of customer service may drop (due to the new poor employee), which
may lead to a loss in customers. Also, competition may ‘steal’ the good applicants, which
means that their quality of products/service will increase, which will lead to them also
stealing customers. Another reason why it is important is because there are many legal
issues that the Human Resources department have to deal with when hiring an applicant,
which costs a great amount of money and also takes a long time. If the right applicant is not
chosen, then it means that the time and money invested into hiring them has been a waste,
and the process has to be done all over again to hire a new person. These wasted resources
could have instead been used to benefit the company, which shows us that recruiting and
selecting the right candidate must be done in an efficient way to be most beneficial to the
organisation.

Why vacancies occur/factors that influence organisations to recruit
The reasons of why vacancies occur are what influence organisations to recruit. One reason
why vacancies occur is because employees may have to go on a temporary leave. This may
be maternity leave, paternity leave, because of sickness or other potential reasons. This
means that the organisation must find temporary cover in order for the job role to be filled
and for their work to be done. However, the organisation may decide that they don’t need
to cover the vacancy, as it’s not worth the cost. Another reason why vacancies occur is
