Prescription drugs require the control of a prescriber to ensure that the patient does not take dangerous or inappropriate medication. The physician or other prescriber must first evaluate the patient to diagnose the illness or condition requiring medication. For example, although patients may be able to choose an over-the-counter (OTC) medication to treat mild headaches, they need health-care providers with medical training to evaluate the cause of severe or debilitating headaches and to identify an appropriate medicine. The more serious the illness requiring medication is, the more likely it will be that the medication is available by prescription only
