Sergio Ramos – Real Madrid and Spain Captain

Leadership skills are a very important aspect in a club captain. Sergio Ramos is a very good
example of a player who has all of the leadership skills necessary to lead his team. He’s won
both the World Cup and European finals as captain for Spain and has won numerous
amounts of Champions League and Spanish League titles as Captain of Real Madrid. He has
been captain for Real Madrid for 4 years and has never gone an entire football season
without winning at least two of the biggest trophies in the world. He has been captain of the
club for the 4 years because he has all the skills needed like: getting tasks done, key
motivation and adapting to get the job done.

There are many leadership styles that a person can have. But the style is their chosen
approach and will determine how others will see them. There are 4 types of leadership
styles:

 Autocratic
 Democratic
 Participative
 Laissez-faire
Autocratic leaders give instructions that they expect other people to carry out. This would work in
situations where employees need to have very clear instructions and where the leader has a lot of
knowledge. However the key weakness with this style is that they do not like being ordered around
and that the employees lower down than the leader may have lots of good ideas that they could
share with their leader if they are given the chance. This could become a problem because other
team member may feel left out and like they are not part of the team.

Democratic leaders like to listen to the points of view of those that they work with. They
tend not to make a decision until they have heard others ideas and would rather consult
than tell.

Participative leaders encourage those that they work with to participate in decision making.
They will delegate responsibility for certain tasks and encourage subordinates to come up
with suggestions for making changes and give them an input on the decision.
