Person centred care recognises the uniqueness and the individuality of people who have
dementia, it is all about focusing on the needs of an individual and making sure that
people’s preferences, needs, and values are guiding decisions about their care, so it is
delivered in a way that is respectful and responsive to them. Health care professionals work
collaboratively with people using the services that they provide to maintain people’s
wellbeing and their quality of life. It is important to recognise people as individuals who also
happen to have dementia so you can see what person they are first, so that they can put the
person at the centre of their care and so they can build a relationship with people who have
dementia based on unconditional positive regards and empathy. For care to be person
centred for dementia the care must be provided with dignity, privacy and respect, their
independence should be maintained, and they should always be empowered, and their
rights should be respected. Carers must ensure they are recognising and appreciating
individuals cultural and religious differences and requirements and their entitlement to
advocacy.
The staff at the Ashford residence need to take Mrs Anjeela Johal Kaur’s needs into
consideration. Anjeela is a practising Sikh and she goes to the Gurdwara every Sunday, her
religion is very important to her and this needs to be taken into consideration by the staff
members. They will need to ensure that there is always a way for her to get to the Gurdwara
every week, and that they have her clothes of choice available for her on a Sunday (her
Burka and a dress or one-piece clothing), they also need to take into consideration her
dietary needs as a Sikh she does not eat meat that was slaughtered in a way that goes
against her religion and she does not consume any alcohol, staff need to make sure that
they always have food available that goes with her religion ensuring that is tastes nice and
that it is nutritious. Anjeela’s dietary preferences also relate to her type 2 diabetes, the staff
should be able to take a person-centred approach to Anjeela ensuring that they make her a
diet plan that takes into both her dietary preferences and her medical needs.
The staff will need to make sure that they are putting risk assessments in place to ensure
Anjeela’s safety. They should have it noted down about her medical conditions and her
allergy to penicillin so it is ensured that she will not be given any penicillin by mistake, this
means that they would be ensuring her safety, especially when there are new staff coming
in who may not be that familiar with her care plan. They should also put things into place
centred around the fact that she has been found wondering off looking for her deceased
husband and feeling lost in places that are familiar to her, the staff members should ensure
that they are always aware of her whereabouts without controlling where she goes, they
