Question 1

The measurement of something refers to a number that shows the size or amount of a certain
thing and it is not enough to teach the method of measuring –we also have to help the
children to understand the concept of measurement.

1.1 With the above statement in mind, discuss the four stages during which the concept of
measurement is developed. (8)
The development of the concept of measurement in children goes through several stages, each building
upon the previous one. These stages help children understand not only how to measure but also the
underlying concepts of measurement. The four stages are as follows:
1. Direct Comparison:
At this initial stage, children begin by making direct comparisons between objects. They might say one
object is "bigger" or "smaller" than another without using any standardized units of measurement. This
stage helps them grasp the basic idea of relative size and understand basic concepts like more and less.

The development of the concept of measurement in children goes through several stages,
each building upon the previous one. These stages help children understand not only how
to measure but also the underlying concepts of measurement. The four stages are as
follows:

1. Direct Comparison:
At this initial stage, children begin by making direct comparisons between objects. They
might say one object is "bigger" or "smaller" than another without using any standardized
units of measurement. This stage helps them grasp the basic idea of relative size and
understand basic concepts like more and less.

2. Non-Standard Measurement:
In this stage, children start using non-standard units of measurement to compare objects.
For example, they might use their own hand spans or blocks to measure the length or
height of objects. While these units are not universally standardized, they help children
understand the idea of using a consistent unit to measure.

3. Ordering and Seriation:
At this stage, children learn to arrange objects in order based on a certain attribute, like
length or weight. This process involves understanding that there is a sequence or
continuum of values, and that objects can be ordered based on their measurements. This
lays the foundation for understanding concepts like length being measurable from a starting
point to an endpoint.
