Megan Middleton Supporting the needs of older people Unit 28. P3, M2, D1

P3- Explain ways in which health and social care workers support the independence and well-
being of older people.

M2- Assess ways in which health and social care workers support the independence and well-
being of older people.

D1- Evaluate ways in which the sectors work together to support the independence and well-being
of older people.

In this assignment, I will be discussing ways in which health and social care workers support the
independent and well-being of older people. I will show how older people’s independence is
promoted through the holistic approach and how they are involved in their care plan. Using the
holistic approach will give service users an improved experience, as the holistic approach focuses on
the person as a whole, which includes health requirements such as;
 Physical
 Intellectual
 Emotional
 Social
 Spiritual
We will also look at the number of services available to older people, this includes;
 Support for independent care
 Social activities
 Equipment to improve quality of life
A number of principles are also applied in order to keep the service user’s standard of life to a high
level. These principles include;
 Anti-discriminatory practice
 Respect and dignity
we will also look at hoe the health and social care workers promote the independence of the service
users. The service user’s life should be as straight forward as possible, avoiding any complications
that would arise if the service user was not supported in living an independent life. I will then end by
evaluating how health and social care sectors work together to provide the best support for
promoting the service users independence.

The lifespan in the United Kingdom are increasing, but the lives of the people in the UK are not
healthier. There are over 3million people aged over 80, this will double by the year 2030. And the
number of people aged 100 has increased by 50% since 2002.

Elderly individuals require much more care and supervision than that of other age groups, so it can
be challenging for a carer to meet the needs of the elderly individual. Simple task that were once
easy may become a task for the ageing individual, this is because they have aged and their body has
decreased in improvement. the body’s cells do not function as they once did, meaning that the
individual will need support in being independent.

Medication alone cannot amend an elderly person’s health, instead, the holistic approach should be
applied to the individual’s care. This is so all areas of the individual’s needs are met. Many methods
can be applied to the service user’s life to make it easier for them. But the service user’s
independence is most important to them and their care. But their independence cannot always be
preserved as the individual ages.
