Medicine to me is about improving people's quality of life, whether it be emotionally
or physically, medicine is a profession which holds great responsibility. Living in
Yemen, I witnessed the unsanitary conditions that the limited number of doctors had
to work with, despite that, the doctors always worked through the struggles together
which demonstrated the importance of empathy and compassion. This experience
prompted me to volunteer with a charity that aids underdeveloped nations like Syria
and Yemen, I was able to progress my interpersonal skills by engaging with the
public and educating them on the health concerns that people in poverty experience.
This has also enabled me to put my bilingual abilities to use in communicating with
people from various backgrounds and levels of understanding.
My interest in the most recent medical developments led me to join a medical
society, where I had the opportunity to converse with like-minded individuals
interested in recent medical news and discoveries that have or will be made, such as
new methods for faster drug development, following the recent pandemic.
I was able to shadow a multidisciplinary team and attend a meeting during a virtual
work experience; it was fascinating to see how different health professionals came
together to achieve a common goal, to help treat the patient, emphasising the
importance of teamwork. Additionally, I observed a doctor’s professional
relationship with a patient; as the doctor diagnosed the patient, he highlighted good
communication skills and it was an extremely rewarding experience to see how
connecting with patients goes both ways. It was fascinating to see how the doctors
kept their composure when dealing with situations they faced. This taught me the
significance of remaining calm and thinking critically when working under pressure
which I applied during my BSMS work experience, where I learnt about the role of the
GP as a source of primary care for general health concerns for patients.
Managing an interfaith society, medical society, a video making platform and A-
levels, whilst also expanding my knowledge of medicine through further reading, has
helped me develop my time management skills; for example, planning meetings
alongside this variety of responsibilities. By collaborating with the other society
leaders, we worked as a team to share the responsibilities. As a member of my
school's medical society, I gave a talk about Renaissance medicine, which helped me
develop confidence and ability to relay my newly acquired knowledge to others,
which will prove useful in medicine when explaining medical terms to patients and
peers in a multidisciplinary team.
My interests in medical ethics led me to read "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,"
which piqued my curiosity in learning more about cancer. I chose to do an EPQ to
investigate causes of racial and ethnic disparities in breast cancer mortality;
exploring and assessing some of the risk factors, such as age and lifestyle,
developed my research and analysis skills. Determined to learn more about human
mortality, I read A Gawande's "Being Mortal," which taught me how the experience of
dying and ageing has become a medical process and how it can be improved by
assisting people in their final stages of life, not only medically but also through
discussions with patients by being considerate and empathetic of patients' feelings.
I believe I can become a committed medical student, as the challenges presented
