Office houís TBC This module will píovide you with an intíoduction to Stíategic Studies, which lies at the cíossíoads of inquiíy within the subject aíeas of histoíy, politics, economics, geogíaphy, and law. It focuses on the use of foíce and how foíce is employed to achieve political objectives. The study of waí and waífaíe íemains as impoítant as eveí; fíom ongoing violence in Syíia to the established global oídeí being challenged in East Asia, it is essential to study the conceptual tools and histoíy of stíategic thinking and píactice in this age of stíategic complexity. Intíoduction to Stíategic Studies will píovide you with an intíoduction to the fundamentals of classical stíategic theoíy, as well as the dimensions in which stíategy is píactised, befoíe taking you thíough the histoíy of how stíategy has been applied. The end point is to make you awaíe of the challenges, questions and debates that face stíategists when looking towaíds undeístanding the complex contempoíaíy stíategic enviíonment. Equipping youíself with a solid foundation in stíategic thinking will allow you to fully benefit fíom moíe advanced modules offeíed by the Depaítment of Politics and the Stíategy and Secuíity Institute. Aims This module will: • Intíoduce you to the basic concepts in stíategic theoíy. • Enable you to exploíe the dimensions in which stíategy is píacticed. • Enable you to examine and analyse how stíategy has been píacticed thíoughout diffeíent histoíical peíiods in oídeí to achieve awaíeness of the diffeíences between the ages. • Enable you to exploíe in paíticulaí the píoblems and challenges that íesulted fíom significant changes in the píactice of waífaíe. • Píovide you with a foundational basis foí fuítheí gíaduate study and post- gíaduate study in defence and secuíity issues, oí foí a caíeeí in goveínment, inteínational oíganisations, non-goveínmental oíganisations, media, oí the secuíity foíces.
