Executive summary
The current global business environment is an extremely volatile one making companies to either
innovate or die out. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the application of innovation
theory to the case of Tesco. The report assesses the essential tenets of the concept. It also
assesses the internal and external environment of the business and how they affect innovative
strategies. Tesco’s bureaucratic structure and autocratic leadership style may act as an
impediment to the innovation process. The threats of substitutes, new entrants, bargaining power
of suppliers are low while the bargaining power of buyers is high and competition intense. The
paper then offers recommendations based on the problems identified in the previous sections of
research to inform the change needed for innovative operations.
