musculoskeletal function - -PROTECTION of vital organs. -Provides sturdy FRAMEWORK for body structures. -Makes MOBILITY possible. -Serves as a RESERVOIR FOR IMMATURE BLOOD CELLS AND MINERALS Skeletal system - -Bone structure -Bone function -Bone growth and metabolism affected by: calcium and phosphorus, calcitonin, vitamin D, parathyroid hormone, growth hormone, glucocorticoids, estrogens and androgens, thyroxine, and insulin. - Face and neck- PROTRACTION & RETRACTION Spine- FLEXION (touch toes) & EXTENSION Hand PRONATION & SUPINATION Hip Ankles, feet INVERSION & EVERSION Neurovascular assessment Psychosocial assessment ways to dx fractures - IMAGING is the primary way to diagnose a musculoskeletal disorder. -Arthroscopy -Nuclear scans -Bone Scans -Gallium Scan -Dual Energy x-ray -EMG -CT -MRI RICE - REST ICE COMPRESSION ELEVATINO Arthroscopy - -Allows visualization inside a joint -KNEE -SHOULDER -Indicated for client with JOINT INJURY to assess the extent of damage -Client presents with PAIN, SWELLING, CREPITUS -CONTRAINDICATED if joint is infected -bone connected to circulatory system, surgical disturbance can cause infection to get into blood and cause sepsis & septic shock -SCOPE in joint, can shave off arthritis Arthroscopy post procedure - -TEACH client post procedure exercises Immediately post procedure: -Assess NEUROVASCULAR STATUS and DRESSING on limb -COLOR, TEMP, SENSATION Care following procedure is on an outpatient basis: -APPLY ICE for 1st 24 hours -ELEVATE extremity for 12-24 hours -Use sling, crutches as ordered -Notify provider for significant changes -SWELLING -REDNESS -PURLUANT drainage
