UR163 Week 6, Day 2 Coping Coping refers to methods a person uses to deal with stressful situation. These may help a person face a situation, take action, be flexible and persistent in solving problems. 2 Basic Categories of coping styles Problem Focused – Examples: Work on managing time, ask for support, establish healthy boundaries, create a to-do list. Emotion Focused – Examples: Exercise, take a bath, Pep talk, Meditate Emotion based coping is helpful when you need to take care of your feelings when you either don’;t want to change your situation or when circumstances are out of your control. For example – Grieving a loss of loved one. It would be important to take care of your feelings in a healthy way. Treatment – Counseling Problem focused coping targets causes of stress in practical waus which tackles the problem or stressful situation that is causing stress, consequently directly reducing the stress. Problem focused strategies aim to move or reduce the cause of the stressor.
