‘Shifting flows of people are the most important factor in shaping
the socio-economic and cultural profiles of a place.' To what extent
do you agree? (16 marks)

Shifting flows of people can either be locally, nationally or internationally
[immigration]. Some of the reasons why shifting flows of people or migration occurs
is because of the improved standard of living in the area they migrate to as the place
they are migrating to may have better quality education, healthcare and job
opportunities [i.e jobs that pay higher wages and good working conditions].
Sometimes people have a choice about whether they move or they are forced to
move, for example, refugees.

Shifting flows of people can have an impact in shaping the socio-economic and
culture profiles of a place. This is because firstly, it helps reduce any labour
shortages. Immigrants are more prepared to take on low paid and low skilled jobs as
for them the income is higher than that they received from home. This means that
undesirable jobs are easier to fill. However, migration increases a place’s population
and therefore there could be overcrowding which would increase the demand for
resources for example house prices and rents may increase which may be
unaffordable to some, especially the migrants that work in low paying jobs which
means that adult house-sharing can become more common and crime rates
increase which can have a negative impact on the place’s identity.

However, migration can also affect how a place develops inorder to improve its
reputation and form a positive identity. For example, Liverpool uses culture-led
regeneration to rebrand the city. In 2008 Liverpool entered the European Capital of
Culture (ECoC) where Liverpool hosted the unique showcase exhibition of ‘La
Princesse’, ‘Liverpool Sound’ which featured one of Liverpool’s own legends, an ex-
Beatle and various other events. Liverpool was extremely successful in attracting
tourists to the city as 25% of all visitors to the city in 2008 were first time visitors. It
also achieved the aim of economic growth generating an economic benefit of £800
million for Liverpool city region that year. It also helped change the negative
perceptions about Liverpool and overall raise the profile of Liverpool as a city. Over
the years Liverpool has continued to play host to culture events like ‘The Giant
Spectular: Sea Odyssey’ in 2012 which attracted over 600,000 people to the city and
generated approximately £32 million. This shows that culture can have an impact on
the economy. In this example, culture had a positive impact on the socio-economy of
the place.

Another example of migration having a huge impact on the socio-economic and
cultural profile of a place can be seen in Southall. Southall has the largest Sikh
community in London and a large Muslim and Hindu representation. Therefore, it is a
diverse community which can be seen through the main shopping area which is
located in Southall Broadway where lots of Asian food, clothes and jewellery are
