This policy was developed by George Kennan The Iron Curtain Definition: This was the nickname, coined by Winston Churchill, given to the divide between Democratic Western Europe and Communist Eastern Europe The Truman Doctrine Definition: The new policy created by Truman that provided economic and military aid to free nations threatened by the spread of Communism The Marshall Plan Definition: This plan allowed the United States to send aid to nations in need, but only if those nations cooperated with American economic goals The Berlin Airlift Definition: This was the name given to the operation intended to bring food and supplies into Berlin despite the Soviet blockade of the west. This operation lasted for 327 Days. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Definition: This defensive military alliance was formed between the United States and ten other European nations. Significance: This was the first time that America had entered into a military alliance during a time of peace The Warsaw Pact Definition: This was the name given to the alliance formed between the Soviet Union and seven other Eastern European countries Brinkmanship Defintion: This policy, followed by President Eisenhower, meant that the United States was willing to go to the "brink" or edge of a third, nuclear war. The Domino Theory Definition: This was the belief held by many that, if one nation fell to Communism, neighboring nations would also fall to Communism. The Eisenhower Doctrine Definition: This address, given by Eisenhower, stated that the US would not hesitate to aid any nation in the Middle East requesting assistance to resist the spread of communism. The U-2 Incident Definition: This incident, occurring on May 1st, 1960, saw an American spy plane shot down by the Soviet Union. Significance: This incident increased tensions between the Soviet Union and the United States. Flexible Response Definition: This policy, followed by President Kennedy, involved preparing for a variety of military response to international crises rather than focusing only on the use of nuclear weapons The Bay of Pigs Invasion Definition: The nickname given to the invasion orchestrated by the CIA and involving anti-Castro exiles who had been trained by Eisenhower. Their goal was to overthrow Castro, but the invasion failed miserably! Significance: Many Americans lost their faith in Kennedy after this failed invasion. The Cuban Missile Crisis Definition: This event occurred when the Soviet Union began to send nuclear missiles to Cuba in an attempt to arm them against any further invasion by the United States. Significance: This event brought the United States to the brink of nuclear war. The Organization of American States Definition: This alliance was formed in 1948 and was meant to prevent the spread of communism in Latin America The Alliance for Progress Definition: This organization was meant to prevent communist expansion in Latin America by offering economic and technical assistance to nations in need. The Berlin Wall Definition: This wall was built by the Soviet Union to prevent the citizens of Eastern Berlin from escaping to the west. Significance: This became the physical symbol for the Cold War! The Central Intelligence Agency Definition: This was the nation's first peacetime intelligence agency whose job was to spy on the Soviet Union and its allies. The National Security Act Definition: This act created what would become known as the Department of Defense. The House of Un-American Activities Committee Definition: This committee was established by Congress in 1948 for the purpose of investigating US citizens who were suspected of being communists
