PARA 1

BPS propose 3 things should be taken into account
1- Replace (replace animals w/ suitable alternative e.g. brain scans)
2- Reduce (reduce the amount of suffering they are exposed to, e.g. give them painkillers if
necessary)
3- Refine (refine procedures to ensure animals experience reduced risk of harm)

Sheridan + King —> use of puppies, pps instructed to administer electric shocks —>
found women = more obedient than men —> groundbreaking research.

Does not justify not finding ethical alternative + reducing harm to puppy.

Problematic as researcher can breach ethical guidelines (they are not the law).

, PARA 2

Comparative psych (USEFUL FOR THIS)

HARLOW (1959) —> Baby rhesus monkeys, looked at primary attachment of infants, cloth
+ food wire ‘mothers’, found babies favoured ‘cloth mother’ (23h compared to 2h).

Strong evidence that can be applied to humans —> suggests there should be greater
importance on PCGs who offer care + warmth over food (both are still vital for a baby).

Useful + avoided ethical issues —> would not have been able to be done on human
babies (consent issues + highly unethical).

ISSUE —> harm avoided in humans was then on the monkeys —> as adults, the monkeys
were found to have socialising difficulties (they rejected their own infants too) —> o
monkeys = social animals —> stifled their development as well as their offspring.
