Mental Health
Week 1: Session 2

Module Rationale:

 We have to look at mental
health holistically, looking at the
individual’s family, school,
professionals around them,
where they grew up etc, we have
to look at it as a broader picture.

Words associating with Mental Health:
 Universal
 Illness
 Therapy
 Positive
 Negative
 Well-being
 Support
 Holistic

Is it a social construction?
 It can be argued both ways.

 Society has a massive influence on our lives.

 Mental illness can be triggered and worsened
by society, but the illness itself is within the
individual.

 Society uses these words so often they become empty signifiers and lose their meaning;
someone may have one bad day and describe themselves as ‘depressed’ when in fact
they’re not.
