The relationship between moral disengagement and aggression
White-Ajmani, M. L., & Bursik, K. (2014). Situational Context Moderates the Relationship
Between Moral Disengagement and Aggression. Psychology of Violence, 4(1), 90-100. DOI:
10.1037/a0031728
Outline
This research focuses on moral disengagement and aggression. It aimed to find if there was a
relationship between the two as well as what affects this relationship.
Methodology
181 university students were recruited and told to be in a study on personality and perception.
They were told to have a partner they would not see and completed the Basic Facts
Questionnaire. Participants were assigned to one condition out of four randomly. They were
asked to write an essay which their partner would rate. Those with the experimental condition
were given a highly negative rate. All participants were then asked to mix spicy sauce into a
glass to be given to their partner. Different conditions assigned responsibility differently.
Results
The findings showed that dispositional moral disengagement had a positive correlation with
the amount of spicy sauce given across all conditions. The revenge condition showed a
significant correlation. This suggests that moral disengagement may lead to acts of
aggression, and that situational context plays an active role in this relationship.
