Happened mainly in Ancient Rome First Triumvirate Julius caesar shared the throne with Pompeius Magnus and Marcus Licinius Crassus from the years 60 to 54 BC with the intention of bringing order over Rome. Ended when Licinius was killed in 53 BC during a battle against the Parthians hoping he could conquer Parthia (because of the wealth it had in store). Anyways, soon after the death of Crassus, Julius Caesar and Pompeius started a civil war ultimately leading to Caesar successful. Second Triumvirate (Very Detailed) The two potential rulers could have been Anthony who was Caesar's military second in command, and Octavian who was Caesar's grandson and successor to Caesar. Antony and Octavian didn't like each other that much, but nobody wanted to go to war because of the previous conflicts. So a close ally of Caesar, Lepidus, helped merge the two into a triumvirate with him with the intention of rebuilding the Roman republic and gain revenge on the murderers of Caesars. They are the true Avengers. Unlike the first triumvirate, the second triumvirate was a legal entity endorsed by the state instead of a private agreement. As you might have expected, the egos of the three got the better of them resulting in Octavian exiling Lepidus because Lepidus thought Octavian was treating unequally, resulting in him making some bad decisions, justifying his exile. Without Lepidus to control Antony and Octavian, Octavian illegally got hold of Anthony's will, and scholars still don't know whether this was a real will or a forged one. This will said things that went against common tradition in Rome, and once Octavian showed it to the Senate, it was enough to support Octavian for a battle against Antony. The chased down Antony to Alexandria where he commited suicide with Cleopatria. And just like that, Octavian was the successor to the Roman Empire throne.
