Antjie Krog is in Kroonstad in die Vrystaat in ‘n familie van skrywers gebore. Sy
die oudste van vyf kinders. Sy het op ‘n plaas grootgeword – haar pa was ‘n bo
en haar ma die bekende skrywer, Dot Serfontein. Sy het skoolgegaan in Kroons

Dié gedig kom uit Krog se eerste digbundel, Dogter van Jefta (1970), toe sy nog
skool was. Sy lewer kommentaar op die “geleerdes” wat ons allerlei dinge wil l
oor die wetenskap, wiskunde en ook oor die sterrestelsels in die lugruim
(atmosphere, space). Die lewensbeskouing (outlook on life) wat ons in hierdie
gedig kry, is die mening van ‘n plaaskind (country girl) wat nie noodwendig
(necessarily) dieselfde voorliefdes (interests) as haar onderwysers en die ander
leerders gehad het nie.
