SAE3701 Assignment 2 semester 1 2023 (Detailed solutions with 2 options of answers). QUESTION 1 The Soweto uprising in 1976 contributed largely in changing, among other things, the landscape of the education system in South Africa. The Soweto uprising of 1976 marked a pivotal moment in the history of South Africa. The youth who stood up against the oppressive apartheid regime, demanding equal education, left a lasting legacy that continues to inspire generations. In this essay, we will reflect on the lessons that can be learned from the youth of 1976 and whether these lessons are still applicable to the youth of today. The Soweto uprising is widely believed to have been triggered by the introduction of Afrikaans alongside English as the language of instruction. However, the event was the result of multiple factors, including the Bantu Education Act imposed by the apartheid government in 1953. The unrest was initiated by students in Soweto. The previous chapter highlighted the impact of education policy changes that strengthened students' shared identity and grievances. The events leading up to the 1976 uprising also saw significant shifts in urban black youth subculture, which contributed to the development of a new political mindset among young people. QUESTION 2 1. Distinguish between formal and informal learning in the pre-colonial context. Informal education refers to the way that children and adults learnt in a pre-colonial society, they used a socialisation process. This means that skills were carried over by the older member of the community from the family. This means that there was no formally trained teacher in a pre-colonial era, like we have today. Informal education was seen as lifelong learning opportunities where the person involved learns from their everyday experiences and the environment they are exposed to. As a whole, this type of education is completely different from the formal education that is received in this era, as formal education is institutionalised and is a structured educational system, where they make use of timetables and classrooms. Formal education focusses on literacy and learning from textbooks whereas informal education was based oral testimony (word of mouth). Oral histories were transmitted from one generation to the other through histories, stories and song and this was done to transmit social skills and morality.
