Why are Managers Important?
• The organization needs the managerial skills/abilities more than ever in uncertain or chaotic
times.
• Critical to get things done
• Of the relationship between employees and their direct supervisors
Managers
Coordinate work activities -> to reach organizational goals
• Actions are effected by both internal culture of the organization and the constraints of the
external environment,
Management :
Coordinating work activities with and through other people
• So activities are done efficiently and effectively
Organization :
• Deliberate arrangement of people who act together to accomplish some specific purpose
• Size of organizations
○ Managers and employees work in a variety of different sized organizations
Large organizations - rep 2% of org in Canada
Small business - rep 98% of all Canadian companies.
What is Management and what do managers do?
Managerial concerns - the functions, roles and skills of managers
, Skills needed by managers
• Technical Skills
○ Knowledge and proficiency in a specific field
• Human Skills
○ The ability to work well with other people
• Conceptual skills
○ The ability to think and conceptualize about abstract and complex situations concerning the
organization.
