Unit 1 - Communication and employability skills
D1 - Evaluate interpersonal and written communication techniques
In this assignment, I will describe what and how I used various techniques during the making of
my assignments. This assignment will show skills I’ve learned to use, mistakes I made and things
that I need to improve on.
Group Work: When I was in a group, doing group work, I had to pay attention to make myself more
understandable, so others in the group would understand me. I have achieved this by not using
technical words and phrases, so everyone in my group understood and communicated with me. The
work itself was easy, we all just had to discuss various things and solve different tasks. I have
improved my confidence level by talking to others (especially at the beginning of the year) as I had to
talk with people I did not know. However, when being part of a group, I tend to talk less and focus
more at the task that is given by the teacher. I would definitely have to improve my ability to talk
more and be a more active person, as I usually think, do and act more than I talk in groups. This does
not mean that I give others more work to do, it just means that I don’t talk as much as others.
Paired Work: When I had to work in pairs with someone, I have always felt confident. No matter
what the task was, I was always able to describe myself clearly and in an understandable way, and
the other person has always understood me. I know this as there was a continuous conversation
between me and the other person, describing what the task was about and how to solve it. When I
tried to talk fast, sometimes I had to pause for a second to re-think everything I wanted to say, as I
tend to gabble when I try to talk fast. This was quickly solved by me as I slowed down.
Blog: When I was writing up my blog, I had to think about various things such as: Language
(Grammar, so every English speaker would understand me), Punctuation, Paragraphs, Capital letters,
Bullet points etc. I believe that I have achieved all of the above mentioned points, as my friends,
people on the internet, my teacher and even my family members could understand my blog, clearly.
Since my post was about my Sony Xperia Z5 (Smartphone), I had to pay attention not to use too
many technical phrases, words as the average user would probably not understand it, however most
people who visited my blog was able to understand the content very well. Next time I have to make
another blog, I will pay attention to write things in more detail, so there would not only be a basic
information given to users, but more like a formal description about a particular topic or item. This
would make people get a deeper understanding about how the item works and functions. I have
improved my writing skills by doing this blog, as I have avoided to use technical words which I have
replaced with easier words that still makes sense for average users.
Emails: When I had to email my teachers regarding my grades, information, course work or any
other notices, I always made sure to be formal and make my emails look professional. I have
achieved this by looking at templates from the internet and from companies, so I had a good
understanding about how those emails look in real life use. Giving a subject to an email is not as easy
as it sounds. It must be short, so it’d catch the other person’s attention as well is it’d give a basic
description about what the email is about. This would make searching for the email easier, and so
people would be confident opening it up, as they’d be sure that it would not contain any harmful
software (viruses). I believe I made my emails are professional looking, however giving a subject to
an email is not easy for me as I always want to be professional looking, so I can’t just throw there
any names that’d describe the content of the email the best. I need to improve to think faster on a
professional name.
Presentation: When I was doing my presentation, I had to pay attention at various things. I have
used body language to describe myself in a better way, so people could visualise what I was saying,
