How CBT helps: CBT can help a client make sense of how their irrational
cognitions (delusions and hallucinations) impact on their feelings and
behaviour. Understanding where symptoms come from can be helpful for those
w/ symptoms like auditory hallucinations. Won’t eliminate symptoms of schiz
but can make people able to cope which reduces their distress and improves
their ability to function adequately.
People hearing voices can be helped by normalisation – the voice-hearing is an
extension of thinking in words. Delusions can be challenged by reality-testing –
likelihood that beliefs are true.
Help identify irrational thoughts. Understand these thoughts are just delusions.
Help develop alternative hypotheses for her delusions. Give strategies.

positive and negative symptoms. This effect was small but significant. Therefore
moderate support for effectiveness of CBT in treating schizophrenia.
