Atypical sex chromosome patterns = any sex chromosome pattern that
deviates from usually XX/XY formation
Klinefelter’s syndrome = affects males , have an additional X chromosome, sex
chromosome structure is XXY.
Physical characteristics:
- Reduced body hair
- Breast development at puberty and a softening or rounding of body
contours.
- Long gangly limbs
- Underdeveloped genitals
- Problems w/ coordination.
- Susceptible to health problems that are more commonly found in
females such as breast cancer.
Psychological characteristics:
- poorly developed language skills and reading ability.
- Passive, shy and lack interest in sexual activity.
- Don’t respond well to stressful situations and exhibit problems w/
executive functions like memory and problem solving.
Research into kleinefelter’s syndrome
Simpson found androgen therapy (testosterone supplements) alongside
counselling successfully treated patients with KS who had behavioural and
language difficulties.
Swerdlow looked at morality in men diagnosed with KS, they found 13% of the
patients had died which was a greater level than similar non KS patients. Most
