The Compromises Questions and Answers Already Passed What were the various views on slavery in the west? The majority of states in the north wanted to be free states while the states in the south wanted to continue to have slavery. Everyone wanted the number of free states to be the same as the number of slave states. When Missouri became a state, it threw off the equality, so a line was made, 36'30, which was used to say that the states above the 36'30 would be called free states and states below the line would be slave states, where slave trading was allowed. These were the various views on slavery. What was the goal of the free soil party? The main objective of the free soil party was to prevent the extension of slavery into the new territories acquired from Mexico. What was the purpose of the Missouri Compromise (or the Compromise of 1820)? The purpose of the Missouri Compromise was to keep a balance between the number of slave states and the number of free states in the Union. It allowed Missouri to enter as a slave state at the same time Maine entered as a free state, thus maintaining a balance in numbers of free and slave states. Slavery was prohibited in new states north of the southern border of Missouri, but as this was, for reasons of climate and soil, the limit of cotton growing areas, the southern slave states accepted this. 4) What were the results of the Compromise of 1850? How did this Compromise create new conflict over the slavery issue? The Compromise created a new conflict over the slavery issue by saying that when a fugitive slave was found in the "free" states, they would be returned to their owners, and the person who returned the slave would be given $5. Who was Daniel Webster? Daniel Webster was significant to American history because of his willingness to compromise. For instance he delivered his famous "Union-saving" speech in which he favored passage of the Compromise of 1850. Although he was against the spread of slavery in the new territories he was willing to give the Southerners what they wanted to prevent them from leaving the Union. As Secretary of State he negotiated the Webster-Ashburton Treaty, which settled the Maine boundary dispute and avoided a war with Great Britain. Who was Henry Clay? As a result of his compromise, Slave trade in Washington, D.C., was abolished. California entered the Union as a free state. Territorial government was created in Utah, and an act was passed settling a boundary dispute between Texas and New Mexico. Henry Clay was also the founder and leader of the Whig Party. Who was Stephen Douglas? Stephen Douglas introduced the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which repealed the Missouri Compromise, and allowed the possibility of new slave-states by local vote, theoretically all the way to the Pacific. Who was John C. Calhoun? John C. Calhoun thought that the compromises would betray the south. The northerners would have to agree to the federal protection of slavery for the southern states. Who was Dred Scott? Dred Scott was a slave to John Emerson, they spent time in Wisconsin and Illinois, and slavery was prohibited in these states. He sued for his freedom after Emerson died. He claimed "his journey to free soil had made him free." He lost his case in states court. Liberal justices said that Dred Scott should be freed under the terms of the Missouri Compromise. The Conservative justices said that Dred Scott should be denied freedom and rule the compromise unconstitutional. The Supreme Court ruled that he would not be named free because of his trips to Minnesota. The Fifth Amendment states that; " be deprived of life, liberty, or property." The Supreme Court ruled that his trips to the free states did not give him the rights to be free.
