Control theory: considers “why don’t people commit crime?”

Control theorists suggest that to understand crime we should ask “why don’t
people commit crimes?”. The rationale for this starting point is that if we
understand why people are law abiding we can then better understand why
people become law breakers.

Control theorists believe hat conformity to the rules of society is produced by
socialisation and maintained to people and institutions - family, school, etc.

Social control = can be internal and external and both types try to regulate
the occurrence of crime. This is done by putting forward measures and
influences to control the illegal actions of people.
