, AFL2601 ASSIGNMENT 2(20) 10862455 NAOMI GWENDOLENE JOHNSON

QUESTION 1
The Language that I have chosen is Setswana. Yes the language complies with
Gathrie’s criteria for a language to qualify as a Bantu because it has:
➢ A sign of gender, therefore prefixes sorted into classes.
Example: Class 1 Mo-
Class 2 Ba-

➢ Association of these classes into singular and plural
Example: Class 1 Singular Mo – Motho (Person)
Class 2 Plural Ba- Batho (Persons)

➢ Class Concordance
They are needed to link nouns and other words in a sentence.
Example: Mosetsana yo o opelang

➢ No sex reference in correlation with genders
Same subject concord is used for both male and female
Example: Mosadi o nwa metsi
Monna o nwa metsi
