Title: Developing Teams in Business
Teacher: Marry

Introduction
In this assignment I will be defining the attributes and skills needed by a team leader. I will be
producing a table to show the definition of all the skills. In the first section I will be writing about
Leadership. Leadership is a noun that means the action of leading a group of people or an
organisation or this could also mean the ability to do this. There are different types of leadership
styles; leadership style is the way in which a person tries to lead others over a given time period.
Their style is their chosen approach and will determine the way others see them and react to them.
There are four main types of leadership.

Define the term leadership in relation to a business setting and your project work
Leadership is when you lead by example and guide a group or team to towards their goal or aim, for
e.g. in a retail store the leader could be the manager of the store who motivates his or her staff to
continue achieving high number of sales.

Explain the leadership styles (autocratic, democratic, participative, laissez-faire
Autocratic leadership, also known as authoritarian leadership, is a leadership style characterized by
individual control over all decisions and little input from group members. Autocratic leaders typically
make choices based on their ideas and judgments and rarely accept advice from followers.

The democratic leadership style consists of the leader sharing the decision-making abilities with
group members by promoting the interests of the group members and by practicing social equality.

Participative leadership is a managerial style that invites input from employees on all company
decisions. The staff is given pertinent information regarding company issues, and a majority vote
determines the course of action the company will take.

The laissez-faire leadership style is where all the rights and power to make decisions is fully given to
the worker. This was first described by Lewin, Lippitt, and White in 1938, along with the autocratic
leadership and the democratic leadership styles.

Explain the effect of leadership styles on how a team performs
Leadership styles have significant effect not only in small businesses but also in the world’s largest
corporations. These styles affect everyone in the business because it creates the co-operation
culture that influences the whole team and its performance. All leaders have different style in
approaching to their team or organisation. Laissez faire leadership id typically considered the least
effective option because they believe that people excel when they are left alone to respond to their
responsibilities and obligation in their own ways. Democratic leadership is usually considered the
best option for most teams. This is the opposite the autocratic leadership which emphasizes that
management offers guidance of its team and group which team leaders take in consideration.

Describe how you as a leader could change your leadership style according to situation
affecting your project
If I was a leader I would follow the democratic style however I would also have some elements of
autocratic leadership as I believe someone that can make decisions quickly and swiftly defines a
good leader.
