1.1 THE TEACHER’S COMMITMENT TO LEARNERS
The teacher should keep their learners safe in a classroom environment. In the poorer
communities it was difficult for teachers to keep their students safe. One teacher is not able
to control 40+ students in ensuring that they practice social distancing, wash their hands, and
always wear their masks.
The teacher should ensure that all students have all learning material. The teachers and
students’ hat didn’t have access to WIFI or data and a device to send/receive their work
couldn’t work. Teachers who weren’t able to access these resources were unable to send
students materials they needed to keep up with requirements set out for certain learning
periods, many students fell behind and teachers struggled to find out who had and had not
received the material.
The teacher should connect with students on a personal level (background and learning
needs). Teachers could not have face-to-face interactions with students online. Teachers
weren’t able to support children with learning difficulties, they weren’t able to physically see
these difficulties students were facing. When schools went back some students were
struggling and the teachers had to quickly try to figure out who, what and how to help these
students.
1.2 THE TEACHER’S COMMITMENT TO THEIR PROFESSION
The teacher should remain professional in all classroom situations. When online teaching was
introduced, many teachers had to work from home while trying to keep their family or even
pets from interrupting their videos while trying to keep students calm.
The teacher should keep their students at ease. Teachers went back to school and had an
immense fear of catching the virus and had the constant worry that something may happen
to them or their students which made it difficult to make their students feel safe.
The teacher should work as hard as possible. Teachers have had to work harder than ever
before, to ensure that their students are safe, to ensure all students are up to date if they
didn’t work online and ensuring that all those involved in education know what is expected
of them.

2.1 THE TEACHER’S RELATIONSHIP WITH LEARNERS
There was no face-to-face contact between educator and student online, teachers would
struggle to get to know their students on a personal level. The teachers couldn’t find out
which students they would need to get to know better or help more with learning problems.
The teachers in the poorer areas, where they didn’t have online, had no opportunity to create
a relationship with their learners, until they got back to the classroom.
