, ASSIGNMENT 02: Short Stories

‘Rock’ (Lindiwe Nkutha)

Write a paragraph in response to each of the following questions:

1. This story uses first person narration. Explain how the narrative style influences
our perception of the events in the story, and how this contributes to the story’s
meaning. (10)

The first-person narration style in the story "Rock" by Lindiwe Nkutha helps to convey a
sense of intimacy between the reader and the protagonist, Zibusiso. By using "I" and "me"
throughout the story, Zibusiso is able to present her thoughts and experiences in a personal
and relatable way. This allows readers to better understand and empathize with her
struggles and emotions. The first-person narration also helps to focus the reader's
attention on Zibusiso's perspective. By only being able to see events through her eyes,
readers are limited in their understanding of other characters' motivations and actions. This,
in turn, makes Zibusiso's decisions and reactions more significant and meaningful since they
are the only ones we are given access to. Furthermore, Zibusiso's narration style also
contributes to the story's overall themes. Through her first-person perspective, readers
are able to see how she learns to navigate the complexities of the world around her. Her
experiences with discrimination, abuse, and trauma highlight the pervasive nature of these
issues and how they continue to impact individuals long after they first occur. Overall, the
first-person narrative style in "Rock" helps to create a powerful and emotional connection
between the reader and protagonist, as well as to highlight important themes related to
social injustice and personal growth.
