Unit 6: Investigative project
Unit 6B: Produce a plan for an investigative project based on the proposal
By: Ryan Osman

P3: Produce a realistic working plan for the project, including health and
safety and risk assessment.

PROJECT TIMELINE

Aim: to find out how does caffeine affects the heart rate of daphnia

Hypothesis: this investigation will be about how does caffeine affect the heart
rate of daphnia and so caffeine increases the heart rate of daphnia. Caffeine is
known to raise the heart rate of daphnia. This is due to the fact that it is a
stimulant that alters adrenaline levels. A rise in heart rate results from the
combination of these factors. In normal conditions, an increase in caffeine intake
will raise heart rate.

Method
Using a pipette, remove one daphnia and place it in a cavity slide under a
microscope.
Remove the pond water with a tissue and replace it with drops of caffeine
solution around the daphnia.
Allow the daphnia to acclimate for 5 minutes before observing and counting
(with a counter) the heart rate under the microscope for 30 seconds, times the
number by 2 to find out the beats per minute.
Carry out the same procedure for 5 different caffeine concentration such as
0.2M, 0.3M, 0.4M, and 0.5M. make sure to repeat it at least 3 times for more
accurate results.
