Write an account of how Russia’s withdrawal from the First World War gave
Germany an advantage over its enemies. (8 marks) 8/8 Go me!!!

In October 1917, the Bolsheviks overthrew the Russian government and took
control of the country. The Bolsheviks were lead by Lennin, who the Germans
had smuggled back into the country after he was exiled by the Tsar. Riots
began to break out in Russia due to the famine, loss of men and to
demonstrate their views against war. Lennin wanted to achieve a Communist
Russia and this resulted in Russia leaving the First World War. Russia signed a
harsh treaty called The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk in 1918 agreeing to withdraw
from the war by giving Germany huge amounts of land which included some of
the country’s best natural resources and agricultural land. It also meant that
one of Germany’s main enemies was taken away.

The peace treaty which Germany had formed with Russia enabled Germany to
take advantage of a weaker France and Britain. Russia’s withdrawal from the
First World War meant that Germany no longer had to fight on two fronts, so
this meant that Germany immediately moved their troops from the Eastern
front the Western Front. This helped to give Germany an advantage over its
enemies, Britain and France. This also was an advantage for Germany as one of
their main enemies had been taken away. The Germans could now
concentrate all of their military power into beating the French and the British
before the Americans joined the war. Germany decided to plan a huge attack
on Great Britain and France on the Western Front before American soldiers
arrived. They used this huge attack as one last push to see if they could beat
Britain and France before the involvement of America. This was called the
Lundendorff Spring Offensive and this began in March 1918. In addition, the
Treaty of Brest-Litovsk in 1918, also allowed Germany access to greater
resources. Germany gained land and raw materials from Russia. This enabled
Germany to further help ease the shortages in Germany that had been cause
by the British Blockade. This further gave Germany an advantage over its
enemies, Britain and France.
