Summary of key personal competencies I developed in relation to scientific procedures
undertaken.
Scientific skills I have previously developed include:
Calibrating equipment before measuring e.g. balance.
How to change states of matter, e.g. solid to liquid.
How to use paper chromatography when separating substances.
Skills gained after completing unit 2:
How to calculate Rf values from a chromatogram.
Using distilled water to sterilize equipment and so it does not affect solutions.
Using a pencil instead of pen for chromatography so that it does not dilute and
separate with the other substances being separated.
How to correctly scale a graph.
Correct and accurate set up of apparatus.
Application of safe working practices.
Good communication skills
Skills to develop further:
Using the most applicable solvents to get results of higher accuracy.
Using advanced technology during experiments to ensure that I get the best results,
e.g. an analogue thermometer instead of a digital one, magnetic stirrer for constant
and consistent mix.
Different methods for each experiment e.g. gas chromatography instead of paper
chromatography.
Understanding the step by step procedures that need to be followed.

Skills I have developed and improvements I could make to my practice:
Throughout all the unit two experiments I have learnt to follow step by step instructions to start
activities and follow them through to completion. However, an improvement that I would make to
my own practice would be to listen attentively to instructions given by my teachers. Before starting
an experiment our teachers generally perform a demonstration to show us how it should be carried
out accurately. After they have completed this, and we begin our own experiments, I still have not
completely understood the procedure and begin the experiment without asking for further
explanation. This could be a factor as to why my results in each experiment are mostly inaccurate.
expanding on this point I do not always follow instructions precisely and often rush steps in a
method to speed up the experiment. For example, during my titration experiment there were fifty
different volumes of NaOH to measure the Ph of. For every measurement I should have timed it
three minutes, I started of doing this and towards the end began timing them one minute each then
down to thirty seconds. This had an impact on my results and may be why many of them were
