P3- Describe how a selected organisation uses marketing research to contribute to the development
of its marketing plans.

Introduction:

In this task, I will be describing how organisations use marketing research to contribute to the
development of its marketing plans.

Definition of Primary Research:

Primary Research is experiments, investigations, or tests carried out to acquire data first-hand that is
required by a business or organisation. This is another method which businesses or organisations
can use for their business or to find out information. Types of primary research that is carried out
are surveys, questionnaires or interviews with groups of people which is a focus group.

Definition of Secondary research:

Secondary research is when a business or organisation gathers existing data that has already been
produced by another person or business and uses it for their personal research. Types of secondary
research that is carried out are researching the internet and taking information from someone else
who has published it for the public to see and use. Also newspapers and company reports.

Difference between Primary and Secondary research:

Primary research is where someone is gathering new data using their own methods but the data has
not yet been collected by anyone. For example, this could be giving out surveys, questionnaires or
interviews with people which is a focus group. Primary research can also involve doing observations
to be able to collect the data. Secondary research involves gathering existing data that has already
been produced by someone else but has been published so that the general public are able to access
and use the data. For example this could mean gathering the data from the internet, newspapers
and other companies’ reports.

The difference between the both is that Primary research can be classed as more accurate because
it is brand new data and it is updated so the business/organisation would know that the data has
been checked and it is also accurate. Primary research also allows the business to be able to ask
whatever questions they want so that they can get the best market research as possible. But some
people may prefer secondary research because it is already done and saves a lot of time.

With Secondary research it may not be accurate and may also be old because people publish data
on the internet and other sources that the public can access but they don’t update it so this can
affect the accuracy of the data. Also with secondary research whatever data has been collected may
not always apply to your business or organisation because there is no control of what to ask for as
