Despite his youth, William is fully aware of his place in society, he is so incredibly self-aware
and entitled. He is deeply socially conditioned to reject anything that looks different or alien
at such a young age. ‘My papa is a syndic…you dare not keep me’.
‘my enemy…eternal revenge…first victim’ – the readers understand why the creature kills
William and despite the fact that it is wrong the reader can understand why the creatures
actions are fairly justified, coupled with Williams atrocious behaviour.
‘I can too create desolation’ – doubling of Frankenstein, just as Frankenstein created
desolation, the creature is now also, he has been adopted the cruelty that was shown to him
‘hellish triumph’ – the creature is now truly demonic, the burning if the cottage was a
metaphor for entering hell – satanic.
‘softened and attracted me’ – attracted to a woman and mother, Caroline and the other
women in the novel are so idealised and ‘perfect’, the creature has no mother or lover,
sexual desire for a mother figure just like Victor because they are both denied mothers.
‘forever deprived of the delights’ – the optimism that he used to have has disappeared,
Williams response has shown him that no human will ever accept him. He is aware of a
character who is rejected and deprived of love from the Sorrows or Werter.
‘bestowed on all but me’ – he knows that he will never receive any kind of desire or love.
‘thy lover is near’ – he becoming adolescent in the feelings of love and desire, just like in
Paradise Lost when Satan whispered to Eve.
The creature is seeking opportunities for revenge, ‘she shall suffer’, Justine is the symbol of
all the people who had and will reject him, he is seeing a female and projecting her as all the
female of the world ‘be her’s the punishment’.
‘burning passion’ – this is the feeling of desire, the event with seeing Caroline and Justine
has triggered his sexual desires for both women and a mother.
‘My companion must be of the same species, and have the same defects. This being you
must create.’ – the creature wants a mother, friend and lover.
‘the being’ – Victor immediately doesn’t even consider him to be human, however it could
be considered as justified because from the very beginning Victor makes it known that he is
creating a ‘new species’.
