Hello class, my specialty track for my master’s degree is the executive track. The theories that perfectly go with my master’s degree are the leadership theories. There is the great man theory which basically states that leaders are born with the traits they have just like athletes. Unfortunately this theory is not so popular anymore because and finding up to date information was difficult. we live in times of equality this theory was predominantly for males and does not apply in todays time. In the 1900s the theory was still popular. leaders are born with just the right traits and abilities for leading such as charisma, intellect, confidence, communication skills, and social skills. The theory suggests that the ability to lead is inherent of that that the best leaders are born, not made. It defines leaders as valiant, mythic, and ordained to rise to leadership when the situation arises ( Cawthon 1996) . While the behavioral theory is the exact opposite. In Behavioral Theory, the focus is on the specific behaviors and actions of leaders rather than their traits or characteristics. The theory suggests that effective leadership is the result of many learned skills (Corporate finance Institute, 2019). The bahaviol theory can be used in my practice to help me study more and to remind me that any one who studys hard and really has the desire to become great. I must say that I also agree with the great man theory. We must have the will and character to lead and unfortunatly you cant teach a rude person how to be nice and you cant teach a person to be loving and nice to others. Individuals need three primary skills to lead their followers. technical, human, and conceptual skills are behaviors that can be learned. Technical skills refer to a leader’s knowledge of the process or technique; human skills means that one is able to interact with other individuals; while conceptual skills enable the leader to come up with ideas for running the organization or society smoothly(Corporate finance Institute, 2019). Basically role theory is that we all have a role to play when it comes to work and socializing. Manager must play their roles as leaders and be professional to their staff. Such behavior is also expected from the employees I would manage. I would expect nurse to be professional and kind to patients, and also be very knowledgeable about their job, and care. I found a perfect example of the role theory out of the context of nursing and leadership. According to Lipski (2017) In a small school setting, a teacher who is also a parent of a student enrolled in the school has to balance the many expectations and competing demands of being a teacher with the many expectations and demands of being a parent. Is also true in nursing we sometimes have neighbors and family members as patients but we must lay our role and remine a nurse at all time. And be extra careful when its some onewe know it make is so much easier to violate the patients privacy. The role theory would come into my practice as a leader because I will act like a leader, and know that being a leader is not a popularity contest, but instead it’s about doing what right for the patients, the hospital, and our selves. The article mentioned used organizational role theory and cognitive role theory, they are not nursing theories by nursing theorist/they fall under sociology and psychology. Do you have in mind which nursing theorist would apply to your initial post discussion? Hello Professor. Hildegard Peplau's Nursing Theory helps identify the different roles in nursing. According to this theory there are seven roles in nursing. The Seven Nursing Roles are the stranger role, the resource role, the teaching role, counseling role, the surrogate role, the active leadership role, and the technical expert role. You are correct the organizational and cognitive role theories are not actual nursing theory. Peplau helped start many graduate nursing programs, and also served in the Army as a corps nurse. Honestly professor I think every role is instrumental to nursing, especially for those of us in leadership positions. The stranger role opens up comfort and provides an atmosphere of trust. The teaching role is about educating our patients about their health and also educating out staff on policy and the right way to perform a procedure. Peplau also believed in Psychodynamic nursing which is “the ability of the nurse to understand his/her own behaviors in order to assist others (e.g., patients) in identifying perceived difficulties and problems” ( Mennella, & Kornusky, 2018).
